If you have tight, coily 4C hair, you have probably heard of layering products to trap hydration. But when it comes down to wash day, a massive debate always pops up: Should you use the LOC method or the LCO method?
Understanding how to layer your products can mean the difference between soft, bouncy curls and dry, crunchy strands that snap when you comb them.
Here is a breakdown of both methods and how to choose the right sequence for your unique hair texture.

What Do the Letters Mean?
Both methods use the exact same three core components to defend against dryness. The only difference is the order in which you apply them:
  • L = Liquid (or Leave-In): This provides the actual moisture. Because coily hair thrives on water-based hydration, this step is always first.
  • O = Oil (or Serum): This acts as the sealant, trapping the liquid inside so it cannot evaporate into the air.
  • C = Cream: This provides a thick layer of protection, softening the hair and defining the curls.

The LOC Method (Liquid, Oil, Cream)
With the LOC method, you apply your water-based liquid first, immediately seal it with a serum or oil, and then smooth a styling cream over the top.
  • Why it works: Closing the hair cuticle with an oil right away ensures that the hydration from your liquid step stays locked tightly inside the hair shaft.
  • Who it is best for: High porosity hair types. If your hair absorbs water quickly but loses it just as fast, the LOC method provides a heavy-duty double barrier that stops moisture loss in its tracks.

The LCO Method (Liquid, Cream, Oil)
With the LCO method, you apply your liquid moisturizer, layer your heavy styling cream directly on top, and finish with a lightweight serum or oil as the final shield.
  • Why it works: Allowing a rich cream to follow your liquid step gives your strands a double dose of deep hydration before adding a final seal.
  • Who it is best for: Low porosity hair types. If your hair struggles to absorb products and gets weighed down easily by grease, putting a lightweight oil last prevents product buildup while keeping your strands perfectly soft.

How to Build Your Perfect System
No matter which sequence your hair prefers, mixing random product lines that don't work in harmony can confuse your strands and lead to flaky white buildup.
To get the absolute best results, you want a single, harmonious routine using clean ingredients from the earth. Try experimenting with both methods using a simplified routine:
  1. The Liquid Layer: Use a clean, water-based mist to instantly soothe your scalp and soften tight kinks.
  2. The Cream Layer: Apply a rich curl butter cream to infuse long-lasting moisture and make styling easy.
  3. The Oil Layer: Finish with an antioxidant-packed biotin growth serum to protect your strands from the root to the very tip.
Listen to your hair—test the LOC order on one side of your head and the LCO order on the other on your next wash day to see which side stays soft the longest!
